DELICATE FLOWERS
Paintings by Manda McKay

Delicate Flower of Womanhood II
by Manda McKay

Manda McKay, a medical and veterinary illustrator turned painter living in Athens, is new to the fine art world. However, her paintings have been displayed in numerous solo and juried exhibitions and have appeared on album covers for local bands, which is practically a requirement for an Athens artist.

A love of nature is evident in her subject matter and the influence of her former profession can be seen in her realistic technique. But, unlike medical illustrations, her paintings are meant to persuade rather than inform.

"I paint with an ulterior motive," she says. "My still lifes highlight humanitarian concerns by combining natural objects into suggestive new forms. Various items become shorthand for provocative concepts. I hope to express both ferocity and fragility, with my outrage softened by playfulness. To protest injustice through satire is exciting to me."

Exhibition on display through

Georgia Small Works
Juried Exhibition
GSW Frame

This annual juried exhibition promises to be a crowd pleaser, again. The premise behind the exhibit is that no artwork will be larger than 14"x14"x14", hence the small works. The exhibit will be comprised of 2D and 3D pieces, representing the best of the small works as chosen by juror Beth Sale, Director of Art Galleries for the University of North Georgia.

Beth is responsible for the university's gallery activities in Watkinsville, Dahlonega, and Gainesville. As Director, she has scheduled and curated numerous exhibits and gallery-related events.

Ms. Sale earned a BFA in Painting from the University of Georgia and an MFA in Studio Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition, Beth is an accomplished artist in her own right, has exhibited her paintings in numerous venues, also currently teaches at UNG, and wrote the Art Notes column for The Flagpole Magazine in Athens for several years.
