Historic marker ceremony

On Sunday, October 19, 2014, at 3 p.m. there will be a dedication ceremony for a Historic Marker that has been placed at 4931 Price Mill Road in Bishop, Oconee County, Georgia.  The marker has been placed by the Thomas Miller Chapter, National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century.  This is the site of the "Oak Branch Fairgrounds, Racetrack, and Branch Family Home" where a 1/2-mile harness racing track was built in 1893, and a five day fair was held here every October for many years.  The fair included harness racing, fair exhibits of agriculture products and ladies handiwork.  Newspaper accounts show that as many as 300 citizens attended these fairs and horses came to Bishop on trains to enter in the races. The race track is still on the property.  In case of inclement weather the ceremony will be held in the historic dairy barn.  The public is welcome.

I hope that there will be a good representation from the historical society at what should be an interesting and fun event.
