"The Confederate Treasury"
by
Dr. Mark Waters
The program for the June 4 (2015) regular meeting of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, TRR Cobb Camp #97, will be provided by Dr. Mark Waters, historian and professor at the University of North Georgia.
Dr. Waters will provide a talk on how the Confederate Gold got all the way down to Georgia.  When the Confederate Treasury was evacuated from Richmond on the night of April 2nd, 1865, no one could have predicted the convoluted path it would take over ensuing weeks.  It seems like a precious cargo like the Confederate Treasury would have been taken to a safe location and locked up under heavy guard.  It clearly didn't happen this way.  The saga of the Confederate Gold is one of the most interesting Civil War stories; also, taking place Wilkes County, Georgia.  The talk will cover its final disposition, what happened to it, what was accounted for, and what was not.  The speaker will also cover what remains unknown about this complex and interesting story.
The meeting is open to the public.  This presentation is part of the Sons Confederate Veterans Camp #97 monthly series of historical talks about the South, the War Between the States, the Confederacy, and other historical aspects provided as a public service.  The talks are presented by authors, historians, and researchers. The meeting is held at 7:00 pm, first Thursday of each month, at the Watkinsville Community Center, 191 VFW Dr., Watkinsville, GA, 30677.  Refreshments are served afterwards.
