Superior Court Chief Judge Sweat Appointed to Georgia Commission on Family Violence
On
May 28, 2015, Governor Nathan Deal named Western Judicial Circuit
Superior Court Chief Judge David Sweat to the Georgia Commission on
Family Violence for a two-year appointment.
The Georgia Commission
on Family Violence is a state agency that was created by the Georgia
General Assembly in 1992 to develop a comprehensive state plan for
ending family violence in Georgia. In addition, the commission provides
education and training to ensure that all citizens and service providers
are aware of needs and services relating to family violence.
Some
of the Georgia Commission on Family Violence's duties include:
evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of existing family violence
laws; making recommendations for education and training to ensure that
all citizens and service providers are aware of needs and services
relating to family violence; developing models for community task forces
on family violence; and developing standards to be used by the Georgia
Department of Corrections in the certification and regulation of Family
Violence Intervention Programs.
Judge Sweat was elected to serve
on the superior court bench in 2002 in the Western Judicial Circuit,
which is comprised of Clarke and Oconee counties. Once on the bench,
Judge Sweat assisted in establishing a court-supervised program to
ensure that respondents subject to civil Family Violence Protective
Orders complied with the statutory requirement of completing a Family
Violence Intervention Program. In the program, the judge designates an
officer in Athens-Clarke County Probation Services to supervise the
respondents and to return non-compliant respondents to court for
contempt sanctions.
Sweat also presides over the Western Circuit
Treatment and Accountability Mental Health Court. On the state level, he
is the chair of the Uniform Rules Committee of the Council of Superior
Court Judges. Sweat earned a bachelor’s degree from Augusta College and a
law degree from the University of Georgia.
