Little bit about a lot of things
Oconee County primary election season is almost upon us, and lots of signs of the upcoming early voting are here. First a few warnings:
AVOID WATKINSVILLE AT NIGHT: unless you like to wait on Main Street for 15 minutes for an escort car to lead you around the on-going paving. I would suggest using Experiment Station Road, Water Street, Barnett Shoals or Whitehall/Simonton Bridge or any number of cut-thru routes or alternative roads or get on a bike or walk.
THUMBS UP to my young NAMELESS neighbor : although he was not responsible for the ongoing vandalism to the ridiculous amount of political yard signs in my scruffy yard, he took the initiative to correct the turning upside down of the signs and what not when I came home at an odd hour for lunch the other day and most of the neighborhood kids were sitting under a tree and I had to threaten calling the cops on them. BTW, homey, I am glad you can read, and I appreciate your comment, but there is such a thing as a fair use doctrine and the second you stepped on my property, or I published your photo in the Athens Banner-Herald's Oconee Living section, your name and likeness become part of the public domain, and I have every right to use them. If what you say is true then why are you wasting your summer vacation reading my blog? I respect you and your family enough to remove your name.
THUMBS DOWN to the unknown mohawked thick haired punk for causing the damage in the first place but I will reluctantly give him props for at least fessing up to it when Tommy stepped up and corrected his juvenile delinquency.
SORRY TO SEE YOU GO to Delores Schofill and Circa Antiques in Watkinsville, as well as the Georgia Originals store of Jerry and Kathy Chappelle of Happy Valley Pottery. I hope downtown Watkinsville will rebound from the loss of these two anchor stores. Georgia Originals at least will be in the historic Haygood house of the Chappelles a little further up Main Street. Brian Brodrick wrote a good piece in his blog about the closing of Circa.
LET'S MAKE IT A LITTLE CLEARER to the Oconee County Recreation Department for their kids and their ability to spend money on field trips. I am grateful for their summer camp and that the kids get to go to places like Stone Mountain, but I would have packed $20.00 in my son's (lack of) pockets for the road trip if I knew they were going to have to leave their packed lunches on the bus and not have free water or refreshments to drink while at the park. I gave my son some money for an earlier trip to the Atlanta Aquarium and he was not allowed to buy anything. At least have someone who has some money to buy the kids a cold drink on a hot day on future field trips please.
SEEN SOME MORE POLITICAL YARD SIGNS including Mike Hunter and Sarah Bell. Bell has the distinction of having a last name that is an instantly recognizable image - ding dong - and her signs have been appearing more and more places. Hunter has red, white and blue yard signs that are nothing spectacular but effective. I like the larger Maxey signs I have seen lately with the larger type and Oconee County seems a little bit more recognizable from afar or at least the road on these signs. Johnny Pritchett has built the signs that would survive a tornado and they look like they were built by someone who knows what they are doing when it comes to construction or Hemi pick up trucks.
Tommy Malcom's hand painted and constructed over sized wooden signs are indicative of the lack of money his campaign has, but I still maintain his face against Cowsert will be a whole lot closer than most Athens-based pundits would care to admit at this point. I do not think Malcom will win Oconee by a 3-to-1 margin as I once foolishly predicted, but if Malcom does maintain a 2-to-1 edge in Oconee and splits or squeaks out Walton County, it suddenly makes the relatively few G.O.P. votes in heavily Democratic Clarke County a whole lot more interesting in the District 46 primary.
Be sure to come to the Library this Sunday to hear Rich Clark speak about polling and politics. I have to get the key from Diane and the fine folks at the Library.
