I'm sorry about the stolen signs. It's very galling!
Three quick items/reminders right now!
1. Book challenge tomorrow!
2. Public tour of ag facility -- two chances!
3. A chance to speak your mind -- in the Athens Banner-Herald!
Thanks for reading! Contact me if you need more information.

1. The second part of the book challenge takes place tomorrow at 6 at
Five Points Deli on Epps Bridge Parkway. We'll be discussing Senator
Obama's autobiography "The Audacity of Hope" in a lively discussion
moderated by Dr. Sarah Bell. She was wonderful last month when we
discussed McCain's book; come join us -- even if you haven't had a
chance to finish or read the book! We've also scheduled a book
discussion for our neighbors in Clarke County -- Sunday at 7 at Ciné if
tomorrow's date doesn't suit you. Those discussions are moderated by
Sasha Baker, a spirited Teacher of Excellence in Clarke County.
2. Please join us to tour the ag facility just off Experiment Station
Road (near the entrance to Gainesville State College and the bypass).
We've added an extra date because several people were interested but
could not attend the date we planned initially. You can tour the
grounds with the center's scientists Monday, October 20th, at 4:30 ---
or Thursday, October 23rd, at 5:30. We'll meander around research plots
where studies are underway to investigate best practices for soil and
water conservation and quality. This tour is sponsored by the Oconee
Democrats but is a non-partisan, free, public event. We'll meet at the
J. Phil Campbell, Sr. Center and then hop in cars to go to some of the
nearby sites -- including some on Hog Mountain Road that you may have
wondered about in the past! This is the facility for which the funding
is endangered. Come see the interesting and crucial work they're doing!
3. Here's a message from Julie Phillips, Arts and Feature Editor at the
Athens Banner-Herald that you might find interesting:
Hello voters,
I am writing with a request.
We in the Living section at the Athens Banner-Herald are planning a
photo essay to run before the Nov. 4 election. (Disclosure: I am
blatantly stealing this idea from Under the Radar, an indie music magazine).
The question: In this election season, it's no doubt something that's
come to mind: What's something you expect from your government?
This can be local/state/federal – but just one thing that's really
important to you.
The catch: It needs to be a concise enough answer (ha!) to fit, WRIT
LARGE, onto a poster-board sized piece of paper.
The photo: YOU and YOURS (in case you want friends in on this with you)
– holding up YOUR HANDWRITTEN MESSAGE on said paper (which WE will
provide, along with a big ol' marker for you to write said message).
Our photographer will come to you, or you can come to our studio. You
will at that time write your message, then hold up the paper containing
that message, and we will take the photo. (Note: Larger writing = easier
reading on the page)
This is a bi-partisan question, and we feel it's one way for people to
let our elected officials, *in words written directly by the people*,
know what's expected of them.
We do not expect that we will be able to get everyone's message in, but
we will pick as many as we can.
If you're up for participating in this, please reply to this message as
soon as possible to let us know of your interest.
Then, we must have your "words" emailed to me by 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20.
We will then consider answers and schedule the photos that week.
Thank you all so much -- I am really, really looking forward to
hearing/reading your answers.
Also, please include your phone no. when you reply.
(And feel free to circulate this.)
