Dear OHS members - We will partner with the DAR on a Christmas Parade float. Please read the email from Emily Givens concerning the details of the float. If you would like to participate, please let me know as soon as you can. It should be fun and I hope to see you there. - Ben

Ben and I have been brainstorming the Christmas Float and here is what we propose to do:
Playing off the theme of Holly Jolly Christmas. We want to have two banners on either side of the float that say:
The Oconee County Historical Society and the Rev. John Andrew Chapter NSDAR wish you a Holly Jolly Christmas.
The trailer would be decorated with garland all around it that is stuffed with REAL magnolia leaves, pine and spruce, pinecones and red ribbon and bells.
Hay bales would line the inside of the trailer and we would have a real Christmas tree decorated in a manner that would be indicative of a pre-civil war home in Georgia. We have talked about pine cones, popcorn garland, red ribbons, etc. Ben is going to look into what exactly that would entail. People can ride on the float but they do need to be in costume Is there anyone who can play old timey music on the fiddlle or the banjo or both????..
The Tractor which we hope will be a old green John Deere ' 53 will have a REAL wreath on the grill and two flags, an American and GA State Flag (or DAR) on either side of the back of the seat.
We are asking anyone that participates to be dressed in period costume. THe DAR is responsible for the garland and wreath, ribbons and for helping to decorate everything.
The historical Society is responsible for the tree and hay bales and the flags . We have asked Connie Herringdine, a DAR member, to look into costs for the two banners. At worst, we will split the cost of these. Hopefully, she can get them donated...
We will be throwing out OLD TIMEY candy. I am going to see if Kim at the Granary can order me some wholesale. We have discussed that the Historical Society will hand out flyers about the Society with a little
blurb perhaps explaining the tree and maybe even hand out instructions for making popcorn wreaths as well as the candy...... Open to ideas here
EVERYONE WILL BRING REAL GREENERY to help decorate. We will decorate the trailer in one of Dory Browns' warehouses on 15 which is close in to town on Thursday December 2 and Friday December 3.
More details as we get closer to the date. But do need a count of who is planning to help decorate and who wants to dress up.
