What are we going to do now?
Dear all interested Oconee County open minded individuals:
Time to explain and not complain.
What can we do together to make Oconee County a better place?
We can identify the problems and offer solutions.
I have been on vacation during the initial round of emails going down on this, but let me assure everyone of all several things first.
1. The Oconee County Democratic Party exists because of the hard work of several individuals, and we welcome input from everyone. It is very easy to snipe from the outside and make snarky comments on listservs, but it is much more difficult to regularly attend actual meetings and let your voice be heard as to offer practical answers to every day problems.
2. I challenge each of you to come up with your own list of five problems directly vexing Oconee County residents, and also attempt to solve their list of topics that make life more difficult for all of us.
3. Some people seem to think our meetings are nothing more than a social club, well I hate to burst your bubble, but we do much more than that. We pick up trash on the sides of the roads in Oconee County; we register and educate voters; we show that there is indeed a two party system alive in a heavily Republican County; we demonstrate the practical application of alternative energy sources in every day homes, we support schools, police and other public works; we support the President of the United States. We want more sidewalks and bike paths to be built. We support parks and expansion of recreational activities.
4. If you cannot come up with a list of items important to you, then write a letter to the editor to the Oconee Enterprise or Oconee News Leader newspapers locally, or the Athens Banner-Herald or Atlanta Journal-Constitution about something that moves you personally. Keep the letters under 250 words and please use no obscenities or make personal or professional accusations about the personnel of the newspapers or their editorial stances. Be concise, and be much better read and understood.
5. If writing letters are not your cup of tea (or coffee), then read a blog like my Oconee County, GA Politics at http://oconeedemocrat.blogspot.com or Lee Becker's blog at http://www.oconeecountyobservations.blogspot.com/ or Johnathan McGinty's blog at http://beyondthetrestle.com/. Or if you want to be more subversive, read Republican blogs and comment at former Board of Commissioners chair Wendell Dawson's site http://avoc.info or Kate McDaniel's http://www.apvoc-ga.com/ or check out any of these (several of which are not very current). Join groups, infiltrate the supposed enemy and let them know we are serious. Know thy opposition. Attend a church. Do something.
