Athens Area Habitat for Humanity Newsletter April 2011 110 and 120 Carpenter's Circle   Greetings!  It's hard to believe that we are nearing the end of construction on the first two houses at our Carpenter's Circle development. This initiative has been a long-time coming and we are already seeing the impact on the neighboring community. The siding is going up on both houses this week and it won't be long before we are able to hand over the keys to Katrina Smith and Tina Steele.  We have accomplished so much in only 3 months and we couldn't have done it without our dedicated volunteers and sponsors. Thank you for your commitment to make a change in our community and a difference in the lives of two more hard-working families in Athens.  Until next time,  Spencer Frye Executive Director 20th Annual Silver & Archibald Run/Walk for Home 5k Join us Saturday, April 23rd at 8:00am for the 20th Annual Silver & Archibald Run/Walk for Home 5k! The race starts and ends at the Classic Center (300 N. Thomas Street) and winds through downtown Athens. Prizes will be given to the top 3 males and females in every age group.  Registration is just $15/person before April 15th and $25/person thereafter. Two families have already moved in and two more will move in later this month. We are so proud of these units and what they mean for our community.   The apartments are part of the ReNew Athens initiative. ReNew Athens is an adaptive reuse program designed to create affordable housing options for low-income individuals through the environmentally-conscious renovation of existing multifamily units. It is our intention to use these apartments as a stepping-stone to homeownership by giving families the opportunity to establish credit so they may apply for a Habitat home in the future.  We are currently accepting applications for the remaining twelve units. Athens  Habitat Women Build, a program of Athens Area Habitat for Humanity, empowers women to build homes, enabling them to positively impact the lives of families by making homeownership a reality. Women Build is not about excluding men, but rather including women and encouraging them to take an active role in their community. Local women work alongside Athens Habitat staff and partner families to build simple, decent, affordable homes in our community.           We have formed a committee to begin planning events and fundraising initiatives for the 2011-2012 year and invite you to join us.  Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 19th at 5:30pm in the Athens Habitat offices (located at 532 Barber Street).
