The Pastures of Rose Creek

Hey everyone! I hope that everyone has had a great week! I know many of us have caught World Cup Fever as of late... Here's the latest from the farm.

Organic vs Certified Naturally Grown

Probably the number one question we face when selling produce at the Farmer's Market or even talking about the farm is "well is it organic?" So here's an attempt to try and clear things up and explain a few differences. Please note, we understand this topic can be controversial to some...

Certified Organic
  • Typically for medium to large scale farms – farmers can sell anywhere from your local farmer's market to a Whole Foods store across the country.
  • Offers "Government-backed assurance" - Inspected and ran by the federal government, USDA specifically
  •  Require extensive records and higher fees for registration
  •  Farms allowed to use synthetic substances approved by the USDA
  • Approved substances tend to be very costly

Certified Naturally Grown
  • Typically for small scale farms –  sell direct to market, local restaurant and Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA)
  • Based off a peer review system. Farmers are required to inspect a farm and be inspected by another local farmer annually
    • Grass Roots – Encourages farmers to share ideas with another
    • Helps build a sense of community
    • Farmers have a deep passion for agriculture - to some of us, it is almost a religion
  • Transparent certification process - All CNG farms have their inspection forms and declarations published online for public viewing. Ours is here - http://www.naturallygrown.org/producers/4381
  • Chemicals approved by the USDA are not approved by CNG.
  • No processed foods.

The Pastures of Rose Creek
  • No chemicals whatsoever. Not in the pastures with our cows and chickens. Not in the garden with our produce. Natural.
  • We believe in supporting our local community by providing high quality, healthy food. We want you to know us and know exactly what you are getting.
  • We believe that it is important to help not only our fellow farmers, but our neighbors as well

We aren't saying that Certified Organic is wrong or bad, it's just not for us. CNG was created to complement the National Organic Program. It more-so embodies the sense of community and farming philosophy we believe in so strongly. Additionally, there are various other certifications that many farms across the country use.

Based on all that I have seen in the farming world, I disagree with anyone that says Organic practices are superior than ours. Personally, I much rather have a local farmer declare my food safe than a government official.
